Respirator Face Fit Testing

Reducing emissions of dusts at their source, so far as is reasonably practicable, is a fundamental requirement of health and safety law. However, it is often the case that even after the introduction of engineering controls (e.g. water suppression and dust extraction systems), airborne dust may still be present. Much of this dust can be harmful if inhaled and it is for this reason that dust masks must be worn.

Every person who uses a face mask for some or all of their work activities must ensure it fits properly and effectively protects the wearer against inhaling harmful dusts. Face Fit Testing is essential in ensuring that the correct mask is selected and used properly.

Who Needs Face Fit Testing?

Masks rely on a tight seal with the face to work. This is so that only air going through the filter is breathed. If the mask does not fit properly the dust can slip through any gap between the mask and
the face and into the airways. Dust particles can be much smaller than the width of a hair so the face seal needs to be very good. There are many designs of masks. Not all will fit every face well enough to form a good seal. To find one that does, the user needs to be face fit tested.
At SWSC, we undertake qualitative face fit testing.
Delegates are firstly taken through the process of selecting the correct RPE for the job, adjusting it and fitting the mask to the face until they have a good seal around their mouth and nose. A cowl is then placed over their head and a sweet or sour vapour is introduced to check if the seal is sufficient. Only then can certification be issued. The Certificate identifies the wearer and the specific mask they have been successfully tested with. This is important, as a new Face Fit Test will be required for each type of mask worn by a particular individual.

Individual face fitting required?

Due to the hustle and bustle of work on site it can sometimes be difficult to arrange for several operatives to attend face fitting sessions in one go. To aid with this, we provide face fit training in our offices for individuals or groups of up to four operatives.
